RBC New Wild Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011
Lindum’s Wildflower & Sedum Green Roof Mat took centre stage in the RBC New Wild Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011. Winning a silver-gilt medal, the garden included a ‘wild’ Green Roof and was designed by award-winning landscape designer Professor Nigel Dunnett from The University of Sheffield and The Landscape Agency.
The Green Roof was an important feature of a striking garden studio created from a refurbished shipping container. It was designed to absorb rainwater and then gradually release it into pools below which then distributed water into the garden.
The garden combined ecological awareness with an artistic and sculptural use of materials, and the theme of sustainability. The Green Roof was planted using Lindum’s Wildflower & Sedum Mat, a mixture of wildflowers, sedums, herbs and flowering perennials selected to enhance biodiversity, sustainably grown in the UK and designed to flourish in the conditions created on a Green Roof.
Professor Nigel Dunnett said: “All Green Roofs will enhance biodiversity to a certain extent; however the choice of vegetation is important in maximising the value of the roof to wildlife. We chose Lindum’s Wildflower & Sedum Mat because it combines the drought tolerant aspects of Sedum with the colour and ecological benefits of wildflowers and herbs. These have a longer flowering period and will attract a wider range of birds, bees, butterflies and insects. It provides an exciting space for wildlife on the roof of our garden studio.”
The colourful mix of the Wildflower & Sedum Green Roof Mat includes: Wildflowers such as Oxeye Daisy, Lady’s Bedstraw, Cat’s Ear and Yellow Camomile, three Sedum varieties and herbs such as Marjoram and Thyme as well as pink flowering Dianthus.
The Lindum Wildflower & Sedum Mat has a variety of benefits; it is lightweight, easy to install and low maintenance. It is sustainably grown at Lindum’s nursery in the Vale of York. Lindum Wildflower & Sedum Mat is supplied as a ready-to-roll-out instant vegetation layer and the plants are established in a strong felt mat made from recycled British textiles.
